In winter the boat and the train keep running; the harder part is fitting the most scenic stretches of your day into the light. Book a coordinated, date-specific itinerary that includes the transport you want: Norway in a Nutshell if you are happy to travel independently, a guided minibus, boat and rail day if you would rather someone else watched the connections, and two days with a night in Flåm if you can spare them, especially in midwinter.

Why visit Flåm in winter?

Flåm is a small village at the end of the Aurlandsfjord, with mountains rising steeply on every side. It is much quieter in winter than in the summer cruise-ship season. Snow can cover the mountains and the higher stretches of the railway even when the village itself has rain. A cruise through the Nærøyfjord takes you through World Heritage scenery, while the Flåm Railway climbs a steep valley past waterfalls, tunnels and mountain slopes. They are separate experiences: the railway does not replace the fjord cruise, and a cruise ticket does not include a train unless the product says so.

A typical winter visit involves three attractions: the Nærøyfjord cruise, the Flåm Railway and, optionally, the Stegastein viewpoint above the Aurlandsfjord. Some tours fit all three into a single day from Bergen, but not every package does.

Four practical ways to get there

1. By train, changing at Myrdal

Take the Bergen Railway to Myrdal, then change to the Flåm Railway for the descent into Flåm. The whole trip takes 3 hours 14 minutes to 3 hours 50 minutes, depending on the connection. This suits you if the scenic train and the village are the priority. It does not include the Nærøyfjord: for a fjord cruise, you arrange the Flåm–Gudvangen boat and any onward bus or return transport separately. Our Bergen to Flåm route guide has the winter train times and the last connections home.

2. Norway in a Nutshell

Norway in a Nutshell is a self-guided, coordinated circuit that links the Bergen Railway, a bus through Nærøydalen, a cruise of about two hours on the Nærøyfjord and the Flåm Railway. The Bergen round trip costs NOK 2,482 from October 2026 to April 2027; Fjord Tours' headline price, from NOK 2,698, is the summer fare. You follow the itinerary on your own, without a guide travelling with you. It saves you planning the connections, but confirm the exact routing and the winter times at checkout. It is sold by Fjord Tours, not on GetYourGuide, and our Norway in a Nutshell price guide compares it with buying each leg yourself.

3. A guided full-day tour

Guided days differ a lot. The Nærøyfjorden, Flåm and Stegastein Guided Bus Tour (about NOK 2,950 per adult from the operator, from $311 on GetYourGuide, 4.8/5 from 675 reviews) goes by minibus to Gudvangen, cruises from 12:00 to 14:00 to Flåm, stops at Stegastein and is back in Bergen around 19:00. It does not include the Flåm Railway.

The Viking Village, Nærøyfjord Cruise & Flåm Railway day adds the Viking village at Gudvangen and does include the Flåm Railway, returning by train to Bergen at about 18:17. The operator's adult price starts at NOK 4,200, and GetYourGuide sells it from $420. Both titles mention Flåm, so read the inclusions before you choose.

Two more guided days cover similar ground: the UNESCO Fjord Cruise, Flåm & Stegastein, Incl. Lunch (from $311, 4.7/5 from 1,471 reviews) adds lunch but no railway, and the Legendary Flåm Railway & UNESCO Fjord Cruise (from $377, 4.6/5 from 156 reviews) packages the railway and the Nærøyfjord together.

4. Driving to Flåm

The drive is about 170 km on the E16 through Voss and Gudvangen, roughly 2.5 to 3 hours in good conditions. Winter roads can be snowy, icy or closed by severe weather, so check the official road alerts on the day instead of relying on a summer journey time. You still need separate tickets for the boat and the railway, somewhere to park, and probably a bus back to your car if you take the one-way fjord boat. If you are not confident driving in winter, the train or a guided day is the more comfortable choice.

A real winter day trip: the fjord and the railway

This is the published winter schedule (1 November 2026 to 30 March 2027) for the Viking Village, Nærøyfjord and Flåm Railway tour:

Time What happens
07:30Meet at Bergen Tourist Information
07:45Minibus leaves
08:45Short stop at Dale
09:45Stop at Tvindefossen waterfall
10:45Arrive in Gudvangen
11:00Guided visit to the Viking village
12:00–14:00Nærøyfjord cruise to Flåm
14:30Flåm Railway leaves Flåm for Myrdal
15:56–18:17Train from Myrdal back to Bergen

It is a sample itinerary, not a guaranteed rail connection on every date in 2026–27: a timetable change or a weather delay can move the times. The strength is the boat at midday, when the daylight is most useful. Around 21 December, the weakness is that the Flåm Railway leaves close to sunset and the train back to Bergen runs in the dark. The climb to Myrdal takes about an hour, which still leaves time for the 15:56 train. By February and March there is much more natural light.

Fjord Tours sells a two-day Winter Fjords & Flåm package from November to March, planned around the short days. It includes a night at the Fretheim Hotel, selected meals, the Nærøyfjord, scenic rail travel and Stegastein, from NOK 4,983. Compare everything it includes before setting that against a boat fare. It cannot start on 23 to 26, 30 or 31 December. Fjord Tours sells it directly; it is not on GetYourGuide.

Daylight: why December changes the plan

Around 21 December 2026, Flåm has only about 5 hours 35 minutes between sunrise and sunset, and the mountains shade the village and the railway valley before the sun has officially set. A 12:00–14:00 fjord cruise sits in the brightest part of the day; a 14:30 Flåm Railway departure has much less margin. In early November, February and March the longer days let you enjoy both without rushing, and around Christmas and early January a two-day trip is the more relaxed way to see them.

When you compare bookings, check five things:

  • the time of the boat
  • the time of the Flåm Railway
  • whether Stegastein comes before dusk
  • how much of the day is on a bus and how much is sightseeing
  • whether the package brings you back to Bergen the same day

A trip sold as "11 hours" may include only two hours on the water.

The Nærøyfjord cruise in winter

The Nærøyfjord boat sails between Gudvangen and Flåm, past steep World Heritage cliffs and small farms, and out into the Aurlandsfjord. The modern electric vessels have panoramic indoor lounges, outdoor viewing areas and refreshments, so you can watch from the warm and step out for photographs; our guide to what to wear on a winter fjord cruise covers the clothing. Snow can cover the high slopes while the water stays open at the shoreline. Ice or extreme weather can mean a different sailing pattern with connecting buses, so leave some margin in your day.

The fjord boat is not a sightseeing cruise from Bergen. If you are already staying in Flåm, the Classic Fjord Cruise on the Nærøyfjord (4.5/5 from 97 reviews; check its winter dates) can be bought on its own. From Bergen and back, you need the transfers too, and they are often the biggest part of the cost and the planning.

Is the Flåm Railway worth it in winter?

Yes, especially in daylight. The line climbs steeply from Flåm at sea level to Myrdal at 866 metres, through tunnels and along the mountain valley. Myrdal can be deep in snow even when Bergen is wet. A one-way ride takes 55 to 58 minutes, the train is heated, and the platform changes outside can be cold. Not every Nærøyfjord excursion includes the railway, so check that a train ticket is part of what you buy: the Viking Village, Nærøyfjord Cruise & Flåm Railway day and the Legendary Flåm Railway & UNESCO Fjord Cruise both include it.

What can you do in Flåm itself?

Flåm is small: a waterfront, a few hotels and cafés, the Flåm Railway Museum and the mountains around it. Many places keep shorter hours in winter. The Stegastein viewpoint, about 650 metres above the Aurlandsfjord, is a fine extra on a clear day, but the mountain road up can be icy, and many visitors find an organised transfer such as the Nærøyfjorden, Flåm and Stegastein Guided Bus Tour easier. A night in Flåm lets you enjoy the village after the day-trippers have gone. If a package includes dinner and breakfast, count them when you compare prices.

Are separate tickets cheaper?

Sometimes, but compare the whole itinerary. You may need the Bergen–Voss train, the Voss–Gudvangen bus, the Nærøyfjord cruise, the Flåm Railway and the Myrdal–Bergen train. If the winter connections are poor, a small saving can mean long waits or a missed connection. Check the official timetables for your date and leave a generous buffer for the return. Don't plan an all-day Flåm trip for the day before a flight out of Bergen. Our Norway in a Nutshell price guide prices each leg.

Roads, food, clothing and families

Driving in winter needs proper tyres, careful driving and an eye on the road alerts. Myrdal is a railway junction with no road access, so nobody can drive up to collect you there. Trains and the standard fjord boats have enclosed seating, but it can be much colder at altitude than in Bergen. Pack waterproof outerwear, a warm layer, gloves, a hat, shoes with grip, snacks (check the boat's food rules) and a power bank. Cafés in Flåm keep limited hours in winter, which is another reason not to count on a spontaneous lunch.

A 10 to 12-hour day can be exhausting for children. Some guided tours do not take children under four, so check the policy and the rules on child seats in the minibus. With young children, two days, or a shorter Mostraumen cruise from Bergen, may suit better; our family fjord cruise guide compares them. If anyone in your group has limited mobility, ask about steps and boarding on each train, boat and road transfer separately: an "accessible cruise" does not mean the whole circuit is step-free.

Is a winter day trip from Bergen to Flåm worth it?

Yes, if the schedule is planned carefully. Choose a package that clearly includes both the boat and the railway if those are what you came for. If daylight is short and you can spare the extra night, an overnight trip to Flåm gives you a fuller, calmer couple of days. For the shorter options from the city, see our best winter fjord cruises from Bergen and our guide to a Bergen fjord cruise in December.
