Winter comfort at a glance

  • Our pick: Rødne's Mostraumen cruise, with a warm panoramic lounge, from $78 on GetYourGuide (4.7/5 from more than 10,000 reviews).
  • Avoid in winter unless it is the point of the trip: an open RIB safari, which has no cabin to retreat to.
  • Wear: a waterproof, windproof shell over a warm layer you can take off indoors, shoes with grip, gloves and a hat.

From November to March, most visitors are happiest on a conventional enclosed sightseeing boat to Mostraumen, not an open RIB. The scenery is excellent, and you keep the choice of staying indoors. Rain and wind are usually a bigger problem in Bergen than hard frost, so dress for wet and wind first and cold second.

How warm is a sightseeing boat?

Rødne describes a warm panoramic lounge with seating, large windows, toilets and refreshments, and it sails to Mostraumen all winter. The other standard Mostraumen operators also advertise enclosed passenger areas, and the electric Nærøyfjord boats have indoor viewing areas and cafés. None of them promises a particular indoor temperature, and the doors near the viewing areas open often, but for most passengers in winter clothing the lounge is a comfortable break from the wind outside.

You can stay inside for the whole of a standard sightseeing cruise. The catch is that raindrops and reflections on the windows spoil photographs. Most photographers stay in on the wider stretches and go out for short spells at the Mostraumen strait, a waterfall or the most dramatic mountain views. If you know you cannot face the cold outside, choose a boat with wide panoramic windows instead of an adventure RIB.

Comparing the main operators

Rødne Mostraumen

Rødne Mostraumen leaves central Bergen at 10:00 on its published winter schedule, and the trip takes 3 to 3½ hours. The adult fare is NOK 890 in late 2026, rising to NOK 940 in 2027; children aged 4 to 15 pay NOK 445 (NOK 470 in 2027), and younger children travel free. Rødne lists warm lounges, outdoor decks, a kiosk, Wi-Fi, toilets and baby-changing facilities, which makes it the simplest all-round choice for children and anyone who puts comfort first. Boarding is the main limit: the tide and the steps can make it difficult for wheelchair users, so check your mobility needs with Rødne directly. On GetYourGuide it is sold as From Bergen: The Original Fjord Cruise to Mostraumen, from $78, and our Rødne Mostraumen cruise review goes through it in detail.

Guided Fjord Tours Mostraumen

Guided Fjord Tours advertises fewer than 100 passengers, enclosed panoramic seating and outdoor decks, with a late-2026 departure at 10:30 and adult fares from NOK 840. Its listing says different things about food on board in different places, so don't count on a café; have breakfast first if that matters to you. Check whether the boat on your date suits a wheelchair or a pushchair. GetYourGuide sells it as the Mostraumen Fjord Cruise, the Local Operator, from $88 (4.6/5 from more than 4,500 reviews).

Fjordcharter, with live commentary

The 3½-hour Mostraumen trip from Fjordcharter has an enclosed passenger saloon and outdoor viewing areas, an 11:00 departure in late 2026 and fares from NOK 840. The reason to choose it over another Mostraumen boat is a live English-speaking guide; the route itself is much the same. On GetYourGuide it is the Mostraumen Fjord Cruise with Live Guide, from $88 (4.7/5 from more than 3,000 reviews).

The Nærøyfjord electric boats

Between Flåm and Gudvangen, modern electric boats have indoor lounges, panoramic windows and outdoor walkways, and they can be wonderfully quiet as you pass the towering World Heritage mountains. Getting there from Bergen is the bigger commitment: the cruise lasts about two hours, but the whole trip can take the day. If you are already in Flåm, the Classic Fjord Cruise on the Nærøyfjord (4.5/5 from 97 reviews; check its winter dates) is the boat on its own; from Bergen, see our guide to Bergen to Flåm in winter. The operator may swap boats, so if accessible facilities matter, confirm which vessel you will be on before you buy.

A standard sightseeing boat or a winter RIB safari?

A RIB is an open rigid inflatable boat, and you stay outside for the whole trip. The wind and spray can be fierce, even close to the sheltered shores of a fjord. Operators normally lend you a flotation suit, a life jacket and other protective gear, but you still need warm clothes underneath.

The winter FjordSafari from Flåm has offered trips such as Sagfossen (about 1½ hours) and Undredal (about 2½ hours), with specialist clothing provided and a minimum age of six. They leave from Flåm, not central Bergen, and are sold by the operator, not on GetYourGuide. In Bergen, the Mostraumen Fjord Safari by Premium RIB Boat (from $157, 4.8/5 from 186 reviews) sells individual seats on GetYourGuide only until 31 October. From 1 November 2026 to 31 March 2027 it takes group bookings only, at NOK 17,000 per boat, so don't expect a single seat in winter just because an older travel page mentions winter departures.

Choose a standard boat for family comfort, relaxed photography and warm indoor seating. Choose a RIB only if the exposed ride is the reason for the trip and you meet the operator's requirements.

What to wear: three layers and the extras

  • Base layer: a merino or synthetic thermal top, and leggings if you feel the cold. It moves moisture away from your skin; cotton stays cold once it is damp.
  • Middle layer: a fleece, a wool jumper or a light insulated jacket, easy to take off indoors and put back on outside.
  • Outer layer: a waterproof and windproof jacket with an adjustable hood. Waterproof overtrousers help if you plan to stay on deck in heavy rain.
  • Feet: waterproof shoes or light hiking boots with a grippy sole, and warm socks. Wet quays and decks can be slippery. You don't need heavy snow boots in central Bergen, but they are welcome at snowy Myrdal or a mountain viewpoint.
  • Accessories: a hat that stays on in the wind, gloves (ideally ones that work with a phone), a neck warmer, spare dry gloves if your hands get cold, a small backpack, a microfibre lens cloth and a rain cover or pouch for your camera or phone. An umbrella is awkward on a windy deck.

Families, babies and older travellers

A standard Mostraumen cruise is generally easier with young children than a full day to Flåm. Rødne takes all ages and lists baby-changing facilities. Bring extra warm layers for children, a hat, spare gloves, snacks where they are allowed and something quiet to do on the way back. Space for pushchairs varies, so tell the operator in advance if yours is large. Our family fjord cruise guide compares the options for children.

Older travellers may prefer a shorter cruise with seats and toilets. Balance and boarding matter, though: a boat can have a comfortable lounge and still need steps to get on. Contact the operator if anyone needs step-free access or help boarding. Rødne says tidal differences can make boarding difficult and passengers may have to manage stairs; other operators have their own conditions. The Nærøyfjord fleet is designed with accessible spaces, but another boat may be used on the day. Our accessibility notes have more detail.

Seasickness: sheltered doesn't mean motionless

Much of a fjord route is sheltered, but wind, waves and currents can still move the boat. If you are prone to seasickness, choose a standard sightseeing boat over an open RIB, sit near the middle if you can, keep the horizon in view, avoid long spells of reading or looking at your phone, and eat lightly beforehand. Ask a pharmacist about motion-sickness medication well before you sail, and follow the instructions, because some remedies cause drowsiness. A short cruise is a smaller commitment than a full-day trip, but no route can promise no movement at all.

Photography in rain and cold

Panoramic windows are lovely for watching the scenery and less good for photographs: reflections from the lights inside, condensation and raindrops all flatten the picture. Turn off the flash, get close to a clear patch of window and keep a lens cloth handy. For the best pictures, step outside when it is safe. Keep a strap on your camera, don't lean over the railings, and use a fairly fast shutter speed because the boat is moving. You don't need to stay out all day: two or three short spells at the main sights are usually enough.

What if the weather is awful?

Ordinary rain is rarely a reason to cancel, and it can make the waterfalls stronger. Dense fog matters more for the views. Strong wind or ice can lead the operator to cancel or change the route: ice can affect the narrow inner passage at Mostraumen, and the Nærøyfjord boats can switch to other winter sailings with bus connections. A cancellation by the operator, a cancellation by you and a change of route are three different things, and each can have a different refund. Read the terms for your ticket instead of assuming that "free cancellation" covers every situation.

So, can a winter fjord cruise be comfortable?

Yes. Choose an enclosed sightseeing boat, wear warm layers you can take off and a proper waterproof shell, and go outside for the moments that matter instead of enduring the cold for the whole trip. For most people Rødne Mostraumen is the easiest place to start; the Nærøyfjord is worth the longer journey if you want grander mountain scenery.
