Which one to book
- Half a day in Bergen: Rødne's Mostraumen cruise from the Fish Market quay, from $78 on GetYourGuide (4.7/5 from more than 10,000 reviews).
- A full day for the big mountains: the Nærøyfjorden, Flåm and Stegastein Guided Bus Tour, with the fjord cruise at midday.
- Two days: a winter Flåm package with a night beside the fjord, which takes the rush out of the short days.
Both are beautiful, and they suit different trips. Mostraumen is the easy one: no transfers, a warm boat and the afternoon free. The Nærøyfjord gives you the mountain scale Norway is famous for, at the cost of a long day of trains, buses or road travel. If the fjords are the main reason for your holiday and you have the time, we'd make the effort for the Nærøyfjord, ideally in February or March.

The scenery: what you will see
Mostraumen: cliffs and a close-up waterfall
The Mostraumen cruise starts in central Bergen, where the colourful waterfront and the islands give way to quiet water, small settlements and steeper and steeper slopes. The best part is the narrow Mostraumen tidal passage: the boat slips between rock faces, with the mountains much closer than in the wider fjord, and when conditions allow, it noses in towards a waterfall. It feels like a proper fjord trip while staying close to the coastal communities around Bergen.
On a rainy November day the landscape can be especially atmospheric, with streams standing out white against dark rock and cloud hanging low in the valleys. Snow may lie higher up, but this is the wet coast and snow down at the water's edge is not guaranteed. It suits visitors who want nature without giving up the rest of the day.
Nærøyfjord: towering World Heritage mountains
The Nærøyfjord is part of the UNESCO-listed West Norwegian Fjords. The boat between Gudvangen and Flåm sails through the Nærøyfjord and the Aurlandsfjord beneath mountains and sheer cliffs, with farms and tiny settlements giving the landscape its scale. The modern electric sightseeing boats are quiet and have enclosed panoramic lounges as well as outdoor decks. If you are staying in Flåm, the boat is sold on its own as the Classic Fjord Cruise on the Nærøyfjord (4.5/5 from 96 reviews; check its winter dates).
The boat trip itself takes around two hours; a product advertised as an eleven-hour tour includes the road, train or bus travel from Bergen. The Nærøyfjord usually has a better chance of snow-covered high slopes than Mostraumen, because its mountains are taller and it lies farther inland. It still depends on the weather: rain or a thaw can strip the lower slopes.
Scenery verdict: the Nærøyfjord for imposing mountains; Mostraumen for an easy, close-up look at a narrow strait and its waterfalls.
Other Fjord Experiences You Might Also Like
More winter days out from Bergen and around the Sognefjord: the Flåm Railway up to Myrdal, the Stegastein viewpoint above the Aurlandsfjord, the Njardarheimr Viking village in Gudvangen, Nærøyfjord cruises from Flåm, the Hardangerfjord boat to Rosendal and the Fløibanen funicular up Mount Fløyen in Bergen.
Which is better for snow and frozen waterfalls?
Neither route guarantees snow. Bergen's maritime climate is mild for its latitude and often wet, and snow near sea level comes and goes. Mostraumen can be green or brown below the peaks even in January. The higher ground around the Nærøyfjord generally holds snow better, especially from midwinter into spring. Frozen streams and partial ice formations are possible in cold spells, but many waterfalls keep flowing, and how strong they are depends on the rain and the snowmelt.
If you are travelling in November, treat snow as a bonus. In December and January, snow on the high mountains becomes more likely, but daylight is short. February and March are a good compromise: winter conditions often linger on the mountains, and the days grow longer quickly, which helps with photographs and longer itineraries.
Travel time and what the price buys
At Rødne's standard price, Mostraumen is a single boat ticket, with no transfer if you are staying centrally. The usual 10:00 to about 13:30 sailing leaves time for lunch and Bryggen afterwards. With competing operators publishing adult fares of around NOK 840 to 890 in late 2026, it is an easy purchase to justify. Two alternatives sail the same water: the Mostraumen Fjord Cruise, the Local Operator (from $88, 4.6/5 from more than 4,500 reviews) and the Mostraumen Fjord Cruise with Live Guide (from $88, 4.7/5 from more than 3,000 reviews).
A Nærøyfjord trip from Bergen costs much more, because the boat is only one part of it. The guided tour includes a minibus to Gudvangen, a 12:00–14:00 electric cruise to Flåm, a stop at the Stegastein viewpoint and a return by road around 19:00, with adult fares from about NOK 2,950. That tour does not include the Flåm Railway. On GetYourGuide it is the Nærøyfjorden, Flåm and Stegastein Guided Bus Tour (from $311, 4.8/5 from 673 reviews); the UNESCO Fjord Cruise, Flåm & Stegastein, Incl. Lunch (from $311, 4.7/5 from more than 1,400 reviews) adds lunch, and a dedicated Bergen Bus Winter Tour: Nærøyfjord Cruise, Flåm & Stegastein (from $317) rates 4.9/5 but from only 25 reviews, so read the recent ones first.
Norway in a Nutshell, NOK 2,482 for the Bergen round trip from October 2026 to April 2027 (NOK 2,698 in summer), is a self-guided combination of train, bus and fjord boat that normally includes the Flåm Railway; our Norway in a Nutshell price guide breaks the fare down. If you would rather have a guide handle the connections, the Viking Village, Nærøyfjord Cruise & Flåm Railway day (from $420, 4.8/5 from more than 1,400 reviews) includes the railway. Two-day winter packages, such as Fjord Tours' Winter Fjords & Flåm from about NOK 4,983 (November to March), add a hotel and some meals.
Is the Nærøyfjord worth two or three times as much? If you want the famous World Heritage scenery, it can be. If you want a memorable half-day on a fjord, Mostraumen is the better buy. Compare the time in transport, the time on the water, the extras and the daylight you will have, not only the headline price.
Daylight: the deciding factor in December
On 21 December 2026, Bergen has about 5 hours 44 minutes of daylight. The standard Mostraumen departure at 10:00 is back by early afternoon, comfortably inside that window, which makes it the easy choice in the darkest month.
A full-day Nærøyfjord trip is different. Part of the journey starts before sunrise or ends after sunset, which is fine as long as the fjord and the main viewpoints fall in the middle of the day. A guided tour with a 12:00–14:00 Nærøyfjord cruise times its most important stretch well. On a rail package, check the timetable to see whether the Flåm Railway runs before dusk. A night in Flåm makes the whole trip less rushed. For the rest of the month, see our guide to a Bergen fjord cruise in December.
Warm boats, children and seasickness
Both standard sightseeing trips have enclosed indoor seating as well as outdoor decks. Rødne advertises toilets, refreshments and large windows; the modern Nærøyfjord boats have panoramic lounges and a café. The wind on deck is cold in winter on either route, so wear thermal or wool layers under a waterproof shell, with grippy shoes, a hat and gloves (our fjord cruise packing list has the rest). Take your photographs outside when it is safe, because the cabin lights reflect in the windows.
With young children, Mostraumen's shorter trip is easier. On Rødne, children aged 4 to 15 pay NOK 445 in 2026 and under-fours travel free, while the guided Nærøyfjord tour does not take children under four, so check the age rules before you book. If you are prone to seasickness, remember that fjord water is sheltered but can still be choppy. Choose an enclosed sightseeing boat over an open winter RIB, sit near the middle and look towards the horizon.
Accessibility depends on the operator. Rødne points out that the tide can make boarding harder and that there may be steps to manage. Norway's Best designs its regular Nærøyfjord boats with accessibility in mind but may substitute another vessel. Ask before you pay if you need step-free boarding or other help; our accessible fjord cruise notes cover the Bergen boats.
Rain, fog, ice and route changes
Rain can make the waterfalls stronger, but fog can hide the landscape. Wind, currents and ice can change the route. Rødne and the other Mostraumen operators warn that ice in the inner fjord may mean a different passage. Nærøyfjord operators also warn of winter route changes, and sometimes run a return sailing from Flåm with bus connections instead of the usual through service. A changed route is not necessarily a cancellation, and a refund is not automatic. Read the terms on the ticket you are buying, especially if one particular stretch is the reason you are going.
What we'd choose, month by month
| Month | Mostraumen | Nærøyfjord |
|---|---|---|
| November | Excellent, easy sightseeing, possibly with strong rain-fed waterfalls | Good if you have a full day and accept the early sunsets |
| December | Our pick for a day trip from Bergen | Better as a carefully timed day or an overnight |
| January | Comfortable, convenient and timed for the daylight | Worthwhile, but some transfers run in the dark |
| February | Still excellent | Our pick for a longer scenic winter trip |
| March | A very good half-day option | Longer days make a full-day package appealing |
Before you book
For Mostraumen, confirm the departure quay, the route, the length of the cruise, the indoor facilities, child fares and the cancellation deadline. Rødne sails from Zachariasbryggen at Torget 2; other operators leave from nearby but different quays.
For the Nærøyfjord, check that the transfer from Bergen is included, which direction the boat sails, if the Flåm Railway and Stegastein are part of the trip, whether it is guided or self-guided, and when each scenic stretch runs compared with sunset. Some tours share almost identical names but include different things.
Our verdict
Choose Mostraumen for convenience and value, and the Nærøyfjord for grandeur. Both are worthwhile in winter. On a short break in Bergen, we would rather spend half a day on a good Mostraumen cruise than rush through a badly timed twelve-hour itinerary. On a trip built for scenery, with time to spare, the Nærøyfjord and the Flåm Railway can be extraordinary, especially once February and March bring longer days. Whichever you choose, check the departure times for your date, because winter schedules can change at short notice. For the other winter options, including the boat to Rosendal on the Hardangerfjord (from $94, 4.4/5 from 703 reviews), see our best winter fjord cruises from Bergen.
