The short version

  • October is the easier month. You still get a reasonable amount of daylight, autumn colour can linger on the lower slopes, the summer crowds have gone, and the main Mostraumen cruises sail every day.
  • November feels like early winter. The days are shorter and colder and there may be snow on the mountains, but the fjord cruises keep sailing. The Mostraumen cruise runs every morning, and so do several longer trips to the Nærøyfjord and Flåm.
  • The big change from summer is the timetable. From 1 October two of the three Mostraumen operators run one sailing a day, and Rødne follows from 1 November. This is not the season to turn up at 2pm and assume another boat will be leaving soon.
  • Our pick for either month: the 3½-hour Original Fjord Cruise to Mostraumen (from $78, 4.7/5 from more than 10,000 reviews on GetYourGuide), on the morning sailing.

Best forAutumn scenery and reasonable daylightA quiet, wintry fjord

Bergen averages 8.6°C in October and 5.3°C in November. It rains a lot in both months, so good waterproofs will do far more for you than trying to pick a dry week.

Daylight goes quickly. On 1 October 2026 Bergen has about 11 hours 27 minutes between sunrise and sunset. By 31 October that is down to about 8 hours 44 minutes, and November falls from around 8 hours 39 minutes at the start of the month to about 6 hours 25 minutes on 30 November. That difference is one of the main reasons we slightly prefer October if you have a choice.

Are Bergen fjord cruises worth doing in October?

Yes. October is one of the most interesting shoulder-season months for a Bergen fjord cruise. You lose the long summer days and the warmer weather on deck, but there are far fewer people on the boats, and the landscape changes quickly from autumn to winter over the month.

Visit Bergen promotes autumn for its red, bronze and yellow foliage and its lower visitor numbers. Across Vestland, hotel stays in October are about a third of the July level.

Early October still feels properly autumnal. By late October the scenery can look much more wintry, especially farther inland towards Mostraumen.

October also keeps more choice than the months after it. Rødne still runs its 10:00 and 14:00 sailings on most October days, while the live-guided cruise and the local operator's cruise have already dropped to one sailing each. For a short stay the plan is simple: take the morning cruise and spend the afternoon in Bergen. If you only have one or two days in the city, the 3½-hour Mostraumen cruise is easy to fit in.

Are Bergen fjord cruises worth doing in November?

November needs slightly different expectations. Don't go expecting golden foliage and long hours on a sunny deck. Picture low light, dark water, increasingly bare mountainsides, mist, waterfalls and possibly snow higher up.

Daylight is the biggest constraint. On 1 November 2026 the sun sets at around 16:41, and by 30 November it sets at around 15:39.

The winter timetables allow for this. Every Mostraumen cruise leaves in the morning and gets back in daylight, which makes a short fjord cruise much easier to recommend in November than an improvised afternoon boat trip.

November is especially good if you dislike crowds. Visit Bergen promotes the winter months as a much quieter time to see the fjords, and hotel stays across Vestland in November are about a quarter of the July level.

The best Bergen fjord cruises in October and November

No single cruise suits everyone. The main decision is whether you want a half-day introduction to the fjords or are ready to spend almost the whole day getting to the Nærøyfjord and Flåm.

1. The Original Fjord Cruise to Mostraumen

Best for: first-time visitors, short stays in Bergen, and anyone who wants the most scenery without giving up a whole day.

  • Duration: about 3½ hours
  • Route: Bergen → Osterfjord → Mostraumen → Bergen
  • Operator: Rødne Fjord Cruise
  • On GetYourGuide: from $78, 4.7/5 from more than 10,000 reviews

This is the cruise we recommend first on this page. On GetYourGuide it is listed as From Bergen: The Original Fjord Cruise to Mostraumen. It leaves from beside Bergen's Fish Market, passes Bryggen and heads up the Osterfjord to the narrow Mostraumen strait. The boat has warm indoor lounges as well as outdoor decks, and that matters a lot in October and November. The commentary is a recorded audio guide, not a live one, and there is a kiosk on board.

The cruise runs all year, and Rødne's own answer to whether it sails in bad weather is "Yes! We run every day, rain or shine." On the coldest winter days, ice can block the usual route, and the captain then takes an alternative one.

The timetable changes on 1 November, not 1 October. Rødne's own timetable lists sailings daily at 10:00 and 14:00 in September and October, and daily at 10:00 only in November and December, back at 13:30. Its 2026 booking calendar matches, with one exception: from 5 to 9 October only the 10:00 is on sale. Some listings, including Visit Bergen's, show the 10:00 as the only sailing from 1 October. Rødne's own booking calendar, checked on 24 September 2026, still sells the 14:00 through most of October.

So in October you still have an afternoon option on most days. From 1 November there is one boat a day.

Our autumn pick

From Bergen: The Original Fjord Cruise to Mostraumen

From $78 4.7 (10,000+ reviews) 3.5 hours Free cancellation

Why we recommend it: it leaves from the city centre, sails in daylight in both months, and has warm indoor lounges to retreat to between the narrow sections of the fjord. In October it is also the one Mostraumen cruise that still has a 14:00 sailing on most days.

The commentary is recorded, not live. If you want a guide talking you through the fjord, the live-guided cruise below is the alternative.

Departs beside the Fish Market in central Bergen. Free cancellation up to 24 hours before.

2. Mostraumen fjord cruise with a live local guide

Best for: travellers who want the story of the fjord as well as the scenery.

  • Duration: about 3½ hours
  • Operator: Fjordcharter Norway
  • On GetYourGuide: from $88, 4.7/5 from more than 2,900 reviews

The Mostraumen Fjord Cruise with Live Guide leaves from central Bergen and sails through the Osterfjord and Mostraumen towards Modalen. Rødne uses a recorded audio commentary; here a local guide speaks on board. The saloon has large windows, and food and drinks are sold on board.

Visit Bergen and the operator list the autumn timetable as:

  • April–September: an 11:00 sailing plus an afternoon departure
  • 1 October–31 December: 11:00–14:30 only

On this cruise the single daytime sailing starts on 1 October. If you value stories and local knowledge, this is the Mostraumen alternative we would choose.

3. Mostraumen Fjord Cruise, operated and guided by locals

  • Duration: about 3½ hours (the listing allows up to 4)
  • Operator: Guided Fjord Tours
  • On GetYourGuide: from $88, 4.6/5 from more than 4,400 reviews

A third popular Mostraumen cruise is Mostraumen Fjord Cruise, Operated & Guided by Locals, which you may also see under its older name, the Mostraumen Fjord & Waterfall Cruise. It has an indoor lounge with panoramic windows, outdoor viewing decks and a kiosk on board.

The operator runs one sailing at 10:30 from October to December, compared with two in September (10:30 and 14:30). Visit Bergen lists it as 10:30–14:30; the operator gives the trip as about 3½ hours.

It is a good alternative if the 10:00 Rødne cruise is full on your date.

Mostraumen or Nærøyfjord in October and November?

This is where many visitors get confused. Mostraumen and the Nærøyfjord are not the same cruise.

Mostraumen is the practical half-day trip. You board in central Bergen, sail up the Osterfjord, pass through the narrow Mostraumen channel and come back to Bergen.

The Nærøyfjord is much farther away. A day trip from Bergen usually means a bus, a train or both, plus the fjord cruise itself. So the choice is really:

  • Mostraumen: about half a day
  • Nærøyfjord and Flåm: about 10–12 hours

If you have one full day in Bergen and still want to see the city, choose Mostraumen. If the fjords are the main reason for your trip and you are happy to give them a whole day, the Nærøyfjord is the bigger excursion. Our guide to the best fjords to visit from Bergen compares all six in more detail.

Best Nærøyfjord cruise from Bergen in October and November

Several full-day trips carry on through autumn and winter. Visit Bergen lists the guided tour and fjord cruise to Nærøyfjorden, Flåm and Stegastein throughout 2026, running about 11 hours. Two versions stand out on GetYourGuide.

The guided minibus tour. Nærøyfjorden, Flåm and Stegastein Guided Bus Tour (from $311, 4.8/5 from 666 reviews) runs about 11 hours with a live guide. It combines the drive with the UNESCO-listed Nærøyfjord cruise, Flåm and the Stegastein viewpoint. In winter it leaves Bergen at 08:00, the cruise sails at 12:00, you reach Stegastein around 15:30, and you are back at about 19:00. Late in November the sun sets at around 15:40, so the viewpoint stop comes at dusk.

The version with lunch. UNESCO Fjord Cruise, Flåm & Stegastein, Incl. Lunch (from $311, 4.7/5 from more than 1,400 reviews) packages the cruise, coach transport and a light lunch into one day of about 12 hours. From October it leaves at 07:45 and gets back at around 19:40.

If you want the Nærøyfjord, Flåm and Stegastein in one day, compare these two first.

Nærøyfjord cruise and the Flåm Railway in October and November

One more combination is still a strong choice once the summer season ends: a day that adds the Viking village at Gudvangen, the electric Nærøyfjord cruise and the Flåm Railway. Two operators sell it on GetYourGuide.

Bergen: Viking Village, Nærøyfjord Cruise & Flåm Railway (from $420, 4.8/5 from more than 1,400 reviews) is the better-reviewed of the two. It starts at 08:00 and takes about 10½ hours, coming back to Bergen by bus from Voss. The operator may run the day in reverse, and warns that from October to April ice on the fjord can change the cruise route.

Fjordrive's Viking Village, Nærøyfjorden Cruise and Flåm Railway (from $418, 4.6/5 from 285 reviews) publishes a fixed timetable for the autumn:

Dates Leave Bergen Nærøyfjord cruise Train from Flåm Back in Bergen
1–15 October08:0012:1014:4518:17
16–31 October08:0012:0014:4518:17
1 November–12 December08:0012:0014:3018:17

The midday departure matters in November, because it puts the Nærøyfjord cruise in the brightest part of the day. You will probably get back to Bergen after dark, especially later in the month, but the best of the fjord scenery comes in daylight.

Is Norway in a Nutshell available in October and November?

Yes. Fjord Tours runs the Norway in a Nutshell itinerary all year, apart from 24–25 December and 1 January. It combines the Bergen Railway, the Flåm Railway, a fjord cruise and a bus. In winter the Nærøyfjord boat can be switched at short notice to a round trip from Flåm, with a bus to Gudvangen.

It is another good option if you want a much bigger day than Mostraumen and don't mind a 9- to 14-hour round trip, depending on the loop. It is sold by Fjord Tours, not on GetYourGuide. Our guide to the Norway in a Nutshell price breaks down the package fare against booking each leg yourself.

What does a Bergen fjord cruise look like in October?

October is a transition month, and that is its appeal. At the start of the month you can still find real autumn colour, with yellow, rust, red and bronze on the wooded slopes, especially lower down.

As the month goes on, the trees lose their leaves and the landscape becomes starker. The higher mountains can pick up their first snow while the shoreline stays green or brown, and that contrast can make late October very photogenic.

The trade-off is the weather. Autumn in Bergen is wet and conditions change quickly. The city averages about 8.6°C in October, and on an exposed deck the wind makes it feel considerably colder. Don't dress for a walk around central Bergen. Dress for standing still outside on a moving boat.

What does a Bergen fjord cruise look like in November?

November is much closer to a winter cruise. Bergen averages about 5.3°C in November.

That does not mean every November cruise is snowy. Bergen has a mild, maritime climate and you are just as likely to get rain. Farther inland and higher up around the fjords, though, snow becomes more likely as the month goes on.

November scenery is usually less colourful than October's, but it can be more dramatic: dark fjord water, bare cliffs, mist, waterfalls and white upper slopes. If that is the Norway you picture, November can work very well.

Will it rain on a Bergen fjord cruise?

It might. More importantly, rain does not automatically ruin a Bergen fjord cruise.

The regular Mostraumen boats are built to sail all year, with warm indoor cabins as well as outdoor decks, and Rødne says outright that it sails rain or shine.

Don't spend three hours hiding indoors. Stay inside on the faster, less dramatic stretches, then go out on deck as you reach the narrower parts of the fjord or approach the waterfalls.

A rainy Bergen morning can still give you excellent fjord scenery. Low cloud and mist usually change the look of the landscape without hiding all of it. Heavy fog is more of a problem for the views than ordinary rain.

Do Bergen fjord cruises get cancelled because of bad weather?

They can, but ordinary Bergen rain is not usually enough. The operators sail these routes all year.

Strong wind, unsafe sea conditions or ice can affect a sailing or change the route. Rødne warns that ice can occasionally block the usual route in winter, and the captain then chooses another one. Guided Fjord Tours has the same rule, and says a changed route does not entitle you to a refund.

So think of an autumn cruise as weather-resistant, not weatherproof. We would not put off booking just because the forecast shows rain, especially as the GetYourGuide listings on this page can be cancelled free of charge up to 24 hours before.

Are the waterfalls still good in October and November?

Yes, although they vary a lot from day to day. Autumn is a wet season around Bergen, so the rain-fed waterfalls are often running well. They rarely match the spring snowmelt, but a wet week can come close.

The Mostraumen cruises take the boat in close to the waterfalls when conditions allow, and that is one of the highlights of the route. Just don't book an autumn cruise expecting a particular waterfall to look exactly like the promotional photos. It depends on the rain in the days before you sail.

How much daylight will I have?

This matters more than the temperature. Sunrise and sunset in Bergen, 2026:

Date Sunrise Sunset
1 October07:4419:11
15 October08:1818:29
31 October07:5916:43
1 November08:0216:41
15 November08:3816:06
30 November09:1415:39

The clocks go back an hour when daylight saving time ends on 25 October, which is why sunrise jumps earlier late in the month.

This is why the 10:00 or 11:00 Mostraumen sailing works so well in November: you are on the fjord in the best of the daylight, not trying to squeeze sightseeing into the afternoon.

Early October vs late October

If your dates are flexible, the two ends of October feel quite different.

Choose early October if you want:

  • more daylight
  • a better chance of autumn colour
  • slightly milder weather
  • more time to explore Bergen after your cruise

Mid-October is the compromise. There is still an autumn feel, but the landscape starts to look more like the colder season.

Late October suits travellers who want:

  • quieter conditions
  • a more wintry landscape
  • possible snow on the higher mountains
  • moodier light

The main thing you lose is daylight. From 26 October the sun sets before 17:00.

Early November vs late November

The difference is even bigger in November. Early in the month you still get around eight and a half hours of daylight. By the end you are below six and a half.

For a Mostraumen cruise that is not a big problem, because the sailing is in the middle of the day. On the long full-day tours, expect some of the road or rail travel at the start or end of the day to be in the dark. In late November a 07:45 departure leaves Bergen well over an hour before sunrise, and a 19:40 return is four hours after sunset.

If photography matters to you, early November gives you more to work with.

What should you wear on a Bergen fjord cruise in October or November?

Layers matter more than one enormous winter coat. For October, we would wear:

  • a base layer or T-shirt
  • a fleece or warm mid-layer
  • a waterproof, windproof outer jacket
  • long trousers
  • waterproof or water-resistant shoes
  • warm socks
  • light gloves
  • a hat

For November, add a warmer middle layer and bring proper gloves and a warm hat. A scarf or neck warmer is surprisingly useful on the outdoor deck.

Don't rely on an umbrella. On a moving boat it is far less use than a waterproof hood. The cabin may be perfectly comfortable while the deck feels freezing, so wear things you can take on and off easily. Our fjord cruise packing list has the full list.

Should you book ahead or wait for the weather forecast?

This is one of the trickier autumn decisions. Summer visitors have plenty of departures to choose from. October and November visitors do not. From 1 October the live-guided cruise and the local operator's cruise run one sailing a day, and from 1 November Rødne does too. Waiting until the morning of the cruise is much riskier than it is in summer.

We would book in advance if:

  • you are in Bergen for only one day
  • the fjord cruise is one of the main reasons for your trip
  • you need a specific cruise
  • you are travelling at a weekend
  • you want the Nærøyfjord and Flåm combination

Free cancellation makes this easier. Every tour linked on this page can be cancelled for a full refund up to 24 hours before it starts. If you are spending four or five days in Bergen and can move the cruise from one day to another, you can afford to watch the short-range forecast first.

Is a RIB fjord safari a good idea in October or November?

There is a RIB option: the Mostraumen Fjord Safari by Premium RIB Boat (from $157, 4.8/5 from 176 reviews), a 2½-hour trip with flotation suits, goggles and gloves provided. Visit Bergen lists it daily at 10:00 through October, then on Fridays to Sundays only, at 11:00, from November to late December. GetYourGuide sells dates only until 31 October, so a November RIB trip has to be booked with the operator.

This is one trip where the season really matters. A RIB is far more exposed than a cruise boat, and there is no warm cabin to go into when you have had enough of the wind. On a crisp, dry October day that can be fantastic. On a rainy 3°C November morning, most people will prefer the regular heated cruise boat.

So treat the RIB as an adventure alternative, not the main October or November recommendation.

Which tour to book for which trip

For the classic short Mostraumen cruise, GetYourGuide carries all three main operators, and Rødne's Original Fjord Cruise is the one we would book first. For the Nærøyfjord and Flåm full days, compare the Stegastein tours against the Flåm Railway day before you choose.

So, October or November?

If you have a free choice, October is the easier month for a Bergen fjord cruise. You get much more daylight, a better chance of autumn colour and generally milder weather, and you still avoid the summer crowds.

November is not a poor substitute, just a different trip. Go in November if you like quiet places, don't mind cold or rain, and would rather see the fjords turning towards winter than green with summer.

In either month, choose the 3½-hour Mostraumen cruise if you only have a short stay in Bergen. If seeing one of Norway's famous UNESCO fjords matters more to you than time in Bergen itself, give the day to the Nærøyfjord, Flåm and either Stegastein or the Flåm Railway.

The one thing we would not do is arrive expecting October and November to run like summer. The fjord cruises keep sailing, but with fewer boats and shorter days, so check the departure times for your dates before you plan the rest of the day. For how autumn compares with the rest of the year, see our guide to the best time to cruise the Norwegian fjords.
