Which winter trip to book
- Three hours: the Original Fjord Cruise to Mostraumen (from $78, 4.7/5 from more than 10,000 reviews on GetYourGuide), back in Bergen by lunchtime.
- One long day: a guided Nærøyfjord, Flåm and Stegastein tour, or Norway in a Nutshell if you want the Flåm Railway.
- Two days: a winter Flåm package with a night at the fjord, the most relaxed way to fit the big scenery into short days.
The right winter trip depends on whether you have three hours, one long day or two days, and on whether you want waterfalls close to Bergen or the towering World Heritage landscape around the Nærøyfjord. A two-day Flåm package is especially appealing in the darkest weeks around the solstice.

1. Rødne Mostraumen: the best winter trip for most people
The Mostraumen cruise starts at Zachariasbryggen, near Bergen's Fish Market. You sail up the Osterfjord past waterfront houses and forested hills to a narrow tidal passage between steep rock faces, and when conditions allow, the boat noses in towards a waterfall. In winter, rain-fed falls, mist and the odd dusting of snow on high ground suit the route well.
The winter sailing normally leaves at 10:00 and is back around 13:00–13:30. Rødne publishes it as a daily service through January to March 2027, at NOK 940 for adults (NOK 890 in 2026). Children aged 4 to 15 pay half the normal adult fare. The boats have warm panoramic lounges, outdoor decks, toilets and refreshments. If you are in Bergen for a weekend, this leaves the afternoon free for Bryggen or a museum.
Know the limits before you book. You stay on board the whole time, the cruise does not go to Flåm or the Nærøyfjord, and ice can occasionally force the captain onto a different route.
On GetYourGuide it is sold as From Bergen: The Original Fjord Cruise to Mostraumen, from $78, with free cancellation up to 24 hours before. Our Rødne Mostraumen cruise review goes through it stop by stop.
Two alternatives on the same fjord. Guided Fjord Tours advertises a smaller boat, an adult fare of NOK 840 in late 2026 and a 10:30 departure; GetYourGuide sells it as the Mostraumen Fjord Cruise, Operated & Guided by Locals (from $88, 4.6/5 from more than 4,400 reviews). Fjordcharter runs another option at about NOK 840 with live commentary, advertised at 11:00, sold as the Mostraumen Fjord Cruise with Live Guide (from $88, 4.7/5 from more than 3,000 reviews). Their calendars and discount conditions differ, and neither had confirmed its full 2027 winter calendar when we checked, so look at your exact date before you plan around one.

Other trips that run through the winter from Bergen and the fjords: Nærøyfjord cruises from Gudvangen, the Flåm Railway, the Stegastein viewpoint above Aurland, the Njardarheimr Viking village, Hardangerfjord sailings to Rosendal and Northern Lights tours in Tromsø.
2. Hardangerfjord Express to Rosendal: the best trip for time ashore
This is a scheduled passenger boat from Bergen to Rosendal, not a sightseeing cruise into a narrow fjord with stops at waterfalls. It takes about two hours each way. A typical winter weekday round trip leaves at 08:50, arrives around 10:45, comes back at 14:25 and reaches Bergen around 16:20. That gives you roughly three and a half hours to walk through a small village under the mountains and stop at a café, if one is open.
The published adult return fare is around NOK 872, with lower student and senior fares. The winter service runs mainly on weekdays, with holiday exceptions. Baroniet Rosendal's main visitor programme is seasonal, so don't count on the summer manor-and-garden visit in winter.
Choose Rosendal for a slower local journey with a village at the end of it. Choose Mostraumen if you want a dedicated short sightseeing cruise. Our pick: Cruise to Beautiful Rosendal by the Hardangerfjord, from $94, 4.4/5 from 703 reviews on GetYourGuide.
3. Guided Nærøyfjord, Flåm & Stegastein: the best guided day out
The Nærøyfjord is part of the UNESCO-listed West Norwegian Fjords, and its high walls and inland mountains are on a far bigger scale than Mostraumen. A guided trip from Bergen combines a road journey through the mountains, a roughly two-hour fjord cruise between Gudvangen and Flåm, and a stop at the Stegastein viewpoint, which juts out over the Aurlandsfjord.
Visit Bergen's listing for the guided Nærøyfjord, Flåm and Stegastein tour publishes a winter day that leaves Bergen around 07:45, cruises from 12:00 to 14:00, reaches Stegastein around 14:30 and is back around 19:00. Adults pay from about NOK 2,950, and that tour does not take children under four. It does not include the Flåm Railway. Many fjord day trips with similar names include different things, so read the inclusions line by line. Book this one for an organised day with a guide and a viewpoint, not if the railway is the part you care about.
Our pick: the Nærøyfjorden, Flåm and Stegastein Guided Bus Tour (from $311, 4.8/5 from 673 reviews), which in winter leaves at 07:45 with the fjord cruise at 12:00. If you would rather have lunch included, the UNESCO Fjord Cruise, Flåm & Stegastein, Incl. Lunch (from $311, 4.7/5 from more than 1,400 reviews) covers the same ground in about 12 hours. A dedicated winter version of the Nærøyfjord, Flåm and Stegastein tour (from $317) rates 4.9/5, but from only 25 reviews, so read the recent ones before you choose it.
4. Norway in a Nutshell: the best fjord-and-train combination
Norway in a Nutshell is a self-guided transport package, not a single boat trip and not an escorted tour. The classic Bergen circuit links the train, a bus down Nærøydalen, the electric Nærøyfjord sightseeing boat and the steep Flåm Railway between Flåm and Myrdal. The Bergen round trip costs NOK 2,482 from October 2026 to April 2027 (NOK 2,698 in summer). You can do it in one day on suitable dates, although it makes for a long one.
Daylight is the winter problem: in December and January any full-day itinerary will include some darkness. Check the times of the fjord boat and the Flåm Railway themselves, not just when the package starts and finishes. If you are happy managing your own connections and enjoy scenic rail travel, it is a strong alternative to a guided minibus day.
The package is sold by Fjord Tours, not on GetYourGuide. Our Norway in a Nutshell price guide compares the package fare with buying each leg yourself. If you would rather have a guide handle the connections, the Viking Village, Nærøyfjord Cruise & Flåm Railway day (from $420, 4.8/5 from more than 1,400 reviews) covers the boat and the railway in about 10½ hours.
5. Winter Fjords & Flåm: the best relaxed overnight
Fjord Tours sells a two-day winter package from November through March that spreads the big scenic stretches across the daylight you have. It usually includes the Nærøyfjord cruise, scenic railway travel, one night at the Fretheim Hotel in Flåm, selected meals and a trip up to Stegastein. The advertised starting fare is about NOK 4,983; ask for a quote for your dates. If the fjords are the centrepiece of your trip and you have two days rather than a city-break weekend, this is the option we would look at hardest.
The extra cost pays for a hotel and transport, not just a longer boat ride. You get an evening in Flåm and a far less rushed day. It is sold directly by Fjord Tours; GetYourGuide has no overnight equivalent.
Mostraumen, Nærøyfjord or Hardangerfjord?
| Mostraumen | Nærøyfjord | Rosendal / Hardangerfjord | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct boat from central Bergen | Yes | No | Yes |
| Time to allow | Half a day | A full day or an overnight | A full day |
| Main appeal | The narrow passage and waterfalls | Tall UNESCO-listed mountain scenery | The boat journey and a village stop |
| Flåm Railway included | No | Only in selected packages | No |
| Best in winter for | Easy daylight timing and a warm boat | Possible snow on the high mountains | Local life and time ashore |
Choose the route, not just the word "fjord". Product titles can hide the difference between a harbour cruise, a scenic passenger ferry, a boat leg inside a longer day and a package of several kinds of transport. Our guide to the best fjord cruise from Bergen compares the routes across the whole year.
What changes in winter?
November is often rainy, with mist and full waterfalls. December has the shortest days, roughly 5 hours 44 minutes of daylight on 21 December 2026 (our Bergen fjord cruise in December guide has the sunrise and sunset times through the month). January stays short and changeable. February gains daylight quickly, and by March all-day excursions are much easier. Snow on the mountain tops is likely enough to hope for, especially inland, but snow down at sea level is not a promise in any month. Our guide to fjord cruises in October and November has the month-by-month detail for the start of the season.
The standard Mostraumen and Nærøyfjord sightseeing boats have enclosed lounges and outdoor decks. A winter RIB safari is an open boat, a different trip altogether, and the latest public listing for the Mostraumen premium RIB takes group bookings only in winter. Dress in warm layers you can take off, waterproof outerwear, shoes with grip, gloves and a hat; our fjord cruise packing list has the details. If anyone in your party gets seasick, or you have young children, the enclosed sightseeing boat is the better choice.
Prices, discounts and booking with confidence
Mostraumen is usually the cheapest way to see dramatic fjord scenery from Bergen without paying for separate transport. Several operators publish Bergen Card discounts, but a discount alone does not justify the card unless the other attractions and travel it covers make up its price. Compare the total cost for your party, because child fares and age limits vary from operator to operator, and so do cancellation terms.
Ordinary rain doesn't normally stop a boat. Dense fog can spoil the views, and ice can change the route without automatically entitling you to a refund. Our Bergen fjord cruise price guide breaks the fares down further.
Check that a Nærøyfjord day lists exactly which of these it includes: the Flåm Railway, Stegastein, the Gudvangen transfer, transport from Bergen and a hotel. A 12-hour day trip does not mean 12 hours on the water; the standard Nærøyfjord boat section takes around two hours.
Our recommendation
Book Mostraumen for a short Bergen stay, the Nærøyfjord for a full day of big scenery, and a Flåm overnight for the most relaxed midwinter trip. Compare what each itinerary actually includes, not just the price or the photograph, and check the departure times for your date, because winter schedules can change at short notice.
