December at a glance

  • Our pick: Rødne's Mostraumen cruise, daily at 10:00 from the Fish Market quay, from $78 on GetYourGuide (4.7/5 from more than 10,000 reviews).
  • Daylight: about 6 hours 21 minutes on 1 December, falling to 5 hours 44 minutes at the solstice.
  • Around Christmas: check the exact date in the booking calendar, because holiday timetables differ from the daily December schedule.

You don't have to wait for summer to see the fjords. A December day on the water is shorter and darker, but a morning sailing from the city centre fits it comfortably. The longer trips inland need more planning: December's short days are not the time for a loosely planned chain of connections.

What makes a December fjord cruise worthwhile?

December brings the low sun, mist and dark slopes of coastal western Norway. On a clear day the mountain tops can glow softly while the fjord below stays in shadow, and after rain the waterfalls stand out white against the cliffs. Small waterfront houses and winter villages give the scenery its character. On a grey day the colours can be almost black, white and green, which makes for a memorable mood if you like atmospheric landscapes.

The trade-offs are real. It can be wet and windy, low cloud can hide the peaks, and much of the lower landscape may have no snow at all. A snowy postcard view is not a promise. We would not book only for white scenery or clear skies; we would book because the fjords are remarkable even in changeable weather.

The best short cruises in December 2026

Rødne Mostraumen: our first choice

Rødne's Mostraumen cruise leaves Zachariasbryggen, Torget 2, at 10:00 every day under its published November and December schedule, and the 3 to 3½-hour trip is back around 13:00–13:30. Adults pay NOK 890; children aged 4 to 15 pay NOK 445, and younger children travel free with a booked ticket. The catamarans have warm indoor seating, wide windows, outdoor decks, toilets and refreshments. The route follows the Osterfjord to the narrow Mostraumen passage, with a possible approach to a waterfall when conditions allow. There is no stop ashore, and it does not go to Flåm.

On GetYourGuide it is sold as From Bergen: The Original Fjord Cruise to Mostraumen, from $78, with free cancellation up to 24 hours before. Our Rødne Mostraumen cruise review goes through it stop by stop.

Guided Fjord Tours: a slightly cheaper alternative

Guided Fjord Tours advertises adult tickets at NOK 840, a 10:30 departure, a panoramic indoor lounge and a smaller boat. Visit Bergen lists the return at 14:30, still well inside December's daylight. The official listing describes the food on board differently in different places, so check what is served or eat beforehand. GetYourGuide sells it as the Mostraumen Fjord Cruise, the Local Operator, from $88, rated 4.6/5 from more than 4,500 reviews.

Fjordcharter: live commentary

Another option at about NOK 840, Fjordcharter advertises a live English-speaking guide and a 3½-hour trip, leaving at 11:00 in winter and back at 14:30. It suits visitors who want the stories behind the views as well as the views. It is sold on GetYourGuide as the Mostraumen Fjord Cruise with Live Guide (from $88, 4.7/5 from more than 3,000 reviews). Check your date and the meeting point near the Fish Market before you pay.

December 2026 daylight: the practical numbers

Date Sunrise Sunset Daylight
1 December09:1615:386 hr 21 min
10 December09:3315:295 hr 56 min
21 December09:4415:295 hr 44 min
24 December09:4515:305 hr 45 min
31 December09:4515:385 hr 53 min

A 10:00–13:30 Mostraumen cruise fits inside December's daylight, even at the solstice, and so does a 10:30–14:30 sailing. The mountains do cast early shadows, though, and heavy cloud makes the landscape darker. A late-afternoon sightseeing boat is a poor use of your money in December, unless the city lights are what you want to see.

For the Nærøyfjord, check the time of the boat, not the length of the whole trip. On the Nærøyfjorden, Flåm and Stegastein Guided Bus Tour (from $311, 4.8/5 from 673 reviews), which leaves Bergen at 07:45 in winter, the fjord cruise runs from 12:00 to 14:00, which is good timing, but parts of the road journey are inevitably in the dark. On a tight one-day circuit, the Flåm Railway can run close to sunset. A night in Flåm spreads the trip over two days.

Will there be snow?

There may be snow on the high mountains, but Bergen often has rain at sea level. Mostraumen is fairly close to the coast and its lower slopes may be brown or evergreen. Farther inland, around the Nærøyfjord, Flåm and Myrdal, the high mountains generally hold snow better. December is not the month to come if you need snow everywhere: it can arrive suddenly, and a mild spell can clear it from lower ground just as quickly.

In early December the landscape can still look like late autumn; around Christmas, snow-dusted peaks become more likely; and at any point, fog can hide the mountains. Promotional photos usually show ideal conditions, so look for dated December pictures before you set your expectations.

Temperature, rain, ice and comfort

Bergen has a wet maritime climate, and the wind on an open deck can feel much colder than the thermometer says. The standard sightseeing boats have warm lounges, so you can move between the windows inside and short spells outside. Pack a waterproof, windproof outer layer, wool or fleece underneath, gloves, a hat and waterproof shoes with grip; for photos, bring a lens cloth and rain cover. An umbrella is awkward on a boat deck. Our fjord cruise packing list has the details.

Ordinary rain doesn't usually cancel a cruise, and it can make the waterfalls stronger. Dense fog is the bigger worry for the views. Strong wind or ice can lead to a route change or a cancellation, and operators warn that ice can sometimes block the narrow innermost part of Mostraumen, in which case a different route may be sailed. Read the refund and rerouting terms before you book.

Christmas departures: check the exact date

Rødne and Guided Fjord Tours publish daily December schedules, but a daily schedule does not prove there is a sailing on Christmas Day. Neither had published its 2026 holiday timetable when we checked in October; last winter, Visit Bergen's Christmas list showed Rødne's 10:00 Mostraumen sailing running every day over the holidays. Select 24 or 25 December in the booking calendar, or contact the operator, before you plan around it.

Some dates are already known. Norway in a Nutshell has no departures on 24, 25 or 31 December 2026. The guided Nærøyfjord, Flåm and Stegastein tour does not run on 24 December. Fjord Tours' two-day Winter Fjords & Flåm package cannot start on 23 to 26, 30 or 31 December. The 90-minute Bergen City Cruise does list holiday sailings, including 12:00, 14:00 and 16:00 on 25 December, but it is a harbour-and-coast trip, not a replacement for Mostraumen.

Bergen's Christmas Market runs from 20 November to 22 December 2026 at Festplassen, so it is over before Christmas Day. Gingerbread City (Pepperkakebyen) is open from 14 November 2026 to 10 January 2027, with shorter hours on 24, 26 and 31 December and closed on 25 December and 1 January. Restaurants and supermarkets may be closed or open shorter hours from 24 to 26 December, so book your evening meal and check the Skyss journey planner if you are staying outside the centre.

Choose Mostraumen if a short cruise is enough. Choose the Nærøyfjord if the famous World Heritage landscape is the point of your trip, and think about staying in Flåm when the days are at their shortest. If you would rather not manage the train connections yourself, the Viking Village, Nærøyfjord Cruise & Flåm Railway day (from $420, 4.8/5 from more than 1,400 reviews) includes the railway. Our Mostraumen vs Nærøyfjord in winter guide compares the two in detail.

One easy December day

Have breakfast, be at your departure quay by about 09:30, cruise from 10:00 until early afternoon, then have lunch and walk around Bryggen before the light goes. In the evening, visit a seasonal attraction if it is open on your date, or walk Bergen's lit-up streets on the way to a booked dinner. On Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, expect shorter opening hours than on a normal weekday.

Our verdict

Book a December fjord cruise, but book the right departure. A morning Mostraumen cruise is the most practical choice for most travellers and works on even the shortest days. For a bigger landscape, the Nærøyfjord and Flåm can be unforgettable, especially if you spread them over two days. For the rest of the winter, see our best winter fjord cruises from Bergen, or our guide to fjord cruises in October and November if you are coming earlier.
